Date: 2023-08-18 11:28 am (UTC)What books were chosen for you? The Sunday lunch club by Juliet Ashton, The case of the Black Pearl by Lin Anderson & The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester
Did you manage to read your books? Which ones? Sadly I've been stranded at my partner's house all month with an injured hip, unable to drive and 200 miles away from all my books which is incredibly distressing! I did get The Demolished Man out of the library - I read about 50 pages but ended up DNFing it. It's from the 50s, was very much a product of it time and I struggled quite a bit with the style and the voice, and I kept finding I didn't want to pick it up, and I didn't care about the story or the characters
Would you recommend your chosen book(s)? I would say that if you're used to reading 50s pulp sci-fi, you might get on with it but I wouldn't recommend it in general, no
Did you read anything else this month, outside of your chosen books? I have mostly been reading Temple by Matthew Reilly which is the same level of terrible and wonderful as a SyFy monster movie and I am loving it. And I've just started Murder at Kensington Palace which is the 3rd in the Wrexford & Sloane historical mystery series by Andrea Penrose

I wish you a quick recovery.

Okay, I think I need to read that book - I love that kind of movie!

Date: 2023-08-19 02:36 pm (UTC)The book is Temple by Matthew Reilly. US Military recruits a group of scientists to go to retrieve a lost Aztec idol made of material from an asteroid that has the power to destroy the world - the military wants to weaponise it. The Germans are also after it, having broken into DARPA to steal the weapon the Americans wanted to put it in, and currently, everyone is being attacked by... uh... giant black jaguars. It's terrible and perfect and exactly what I was hoping for!

Date: 2023-08-21 02:28 pm (UTC)What books were chosen for you?
Choice 1: Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini
Choice 2: Fairy Tale by Stephen King
Choice 3: The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
Did you manage to read your books? Which ones?Sadly, no. I broke my foot on August 1st and have been laid up with that pretty much all month, thus I couldn't get to the library :(
If you read more than one, did you enjoy them? What was your favorite?n/a
Would you recommend your chosen book(s)?n/a
Did you read anything else this month, outside of your chosen books? I did! One positive aspect of being confined to my apartment has been that I had time to finally read some of the books on my physical to-read pile.
-> The Last Chairlift by John Irving (recommended)
-> Das Schlaflabor [The Sleep Lab] by Marc Meller (psychological thriller; recommended)
-> Stranded by Sarah Goodwin (recommended)
-> Stay Away From Gretchen by Susanne Abel
I am currently reading "The Prince Of West End Avenue" by Alan Isler, which is pretty funny so far. I am rather confident that I'll finish reading it this month.

Date: 2023-08-21 06:56 pm (UTC)What books were chosen for you? The Vegetarian by Han Kang, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, The Only One Left by Riley Sager
Did you manage to read your books? Which ones? I've only read The Only One Left by Riley Sager so far. We're moving and it's been stressful to say the least. I did start The Vegetarian by Han Kang a couple of days ago, so I guess that's something.
Would you recommend your chosen book(s)? I'd recommend The Only One Left for anyone looking for a thriller to de-stress. It's fairly easy to get into. The story takes place in a gothic, giant mansion where alleged murderer Kit McDeere has just been hired as caretaker for alleged murderer Leonora Hope.
Did you read anything else this month, outside of your chosen books? No :(

If you read more than one, did you enjoy them? What was your favorite?
Would you recommend your chosen book(s)?
Did you read anything else this month, outside of your chosen books?
Remnants of Trust Central Corps #2 by Elizabeth Bonesteel - this is a space opera trilogy and it's quite enjoyable.
Sky Burial by Xinran - this is a Chinese author who wrote about a woman who lived in Tibet
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark T. Sullivan - this is set in WWII and is about an Italian spy
Out of the Shadows Star Wars: The High Republic by Justina Ireland - this is a fun YA adventure

Date: 2023-08-28 11:24 pm (UTC)What books were chosen for you? Choice 1: The Road Trip - Beth O'Leary (contemporary)
Choice 2: The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco (male author)
Choice 3: The Singles Table - Sara Desai (contemporary)
Did you manage to read your books? Which ones? I read "The Road Trip" and started "The Singles Table".
If you read more than one, did you enjoy them? What was your favorite? Road Trip was an easy read and the writing was fine, but I did find some characters really unlikeable and did guess the twist. So far, "The Singles Table" is fun enough.
Would you recommend your chosen book(s)? Possibly, if you want to read something that doesn't involve a lot of thinking.
Did you read anything else this month, outside of your chosen books? Yes, The Deja Glitch by Holly James (fun enough, though I can see why people had an issue with the climax) & Unnatural Death by Dorothy Sayers (good mystery but the period racism is jarring)

Date: 2023-08-30 08:13 am (UTC)What books were chosen for you? Black Wings Beating by Alex London, Life is Wonderful, People are Terrific by Meliza Banales, Cloaked in Shadow by Ben Alderson
Did you manage to read your books? Which ones? I only managed to read Black Wings Beating, haven't been able to get copies from the other two books :(
If you read more than one, did you enjoy them? What was your favorite?
Would you recommend your chosen book(s)? Yes if YA LGBT fantasy is your thing ;)
Did you read anything else this month, outside of your chosen books?
I read
The Tale of the Body Thief by Anne Rice - not recommended, there are better books in her vampire saga than this
In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene - if true crime is your thing, then yes
